Day 4

Today we did a lot of work with numbers, days of the week, and the weather. During circle, we counted to 19 because today was the 19th of May. Then we counted how many "friends" were at school today. There are 16 total in the class and today we were missing 1. "If we have 16 friends in the class and we're missing 1, what's 16 take away 1?" The majority of the classed yelled out "15!" While few added 1 instead of subtracting. Adding and subtracting is still an incredibly hard concept for them to grasp. There are few that really understand it. If you ask one of the kids to name the days of the week they can do it no problem. But if you ask them what comes after Wednesday they really struggle. So we worked on asking them random days and what comes after. Then we went over how the weather was today and how it has changed throughout the week. Luckily, we got to go out to the playground today. Tomorrow we probably won't be so lucky. So to prepare for this misfortune, we have planned several crafts and activities. There are still some people who have yet to finish their crab, we're starting the ocean in a bottle project tomorrow, and we checked out lots of books from the library. If the kids get too rowdy during their centers we have them sing songs full of dance moves. It helps drain out some of their built up energy. As for having them understand religion, the chaplain comes in once a week and tells a Bible story using props. This helps them visualize what she is talking about. Today was very laid back but it's going to take all the energy I have to make it through the day tomorrow.
